Three fulicas arrived today from snailspace. All fine and out and active within seconds of getting into their new tank. They munched on some carrot (I could hear the munching - never had snails before so that's a new one on me), explored the upper reaches of the tank, then one went to sleep up there in a corner (the smaller snail), one took a nap under a branch, and the last one fell asleep in the water bowl. All seems to be fine so far.

Last night I got the larger ones out one by one and had a good look at them. One of them started rasping my hand so I gave him some carrot. They had food in the tank of course, but maybe he wanted hand feeding. He nommed into the carrot I gave him in very short order. We had a cuddle (or whatever you'd call it) for about half an hour, then I put him back with the carrot and got the other larger snail out. she was slower to wake up, I huffed warm air on her with my mouth, sprayed her with some warm water, and she came out a bit. I noticed a tiny broken bit on her shell where the new growth is, very small, about the size of a match head. Eventually she came out fully and had a nibble of the carrot but wasn't too interested. I tried banana, not interested. so after a while I put her back in the tank, gave it all a spray and went to bed. The little snail was last seen hanging upside down over the food bowl like he was auditioning for Mission Impossible. This morning they got up when I did. Big Daddy, as I call him, is the more active one and he's exploring the upper reaches of the tank. Baby is asleep in a top corner. Big Momma is inspecting the food. So it's all going ok. I will keep an eye on Big Momma's shell.

A small crack or break on the new growth will be fine. You may notice momma rasping on her own shell, taking it back past the break. Make sure there is plenty of calcium and it will look as good as new in no time. Congrats on your new snailies.

Hi folks, Sorry I've not been around these last few days - been really busy. Big Momma's shell seems to have levelled out, so maybe she has been rasping. They all seem fine - I haven't handled the baby one much because she / he is so small, but Baby is a champion climber. She goes all over the tank. They've not been very active much in the day time lately, but they do come out at night when I feed them. Big Momma wakes up and does a sort of slow weaving motion from one extreme of her reach to the other, almost like she is swivelling right around as far as she can whilst keep ing her shell still. I havent noticed the other two doing this. It's like she's casting around looking for something (she reminds me of what I do when the light is bad and I can't see anything at all.) Has anyone any idea why she's doing this ? Is she just looking around ? Thanks loads for the offer Sarah, I'd love more snails but I promised my other half I wouldn't have any more than the ones I have now. I will likely to moving in with him this year so I can't really go against that.

Sounds like she's just having a nosey! Nice to hear how they are doing, baby will be ok to pick up as long as you are careful when you peel her off the glass, if she's on the soil it's easier
